How to Request Atlanta Street Repairs and Improvements

Worried about potholes, faded crosswalks, speeding traffic, missing signs, or other street-related issues? The City of Atlanta offers a straight forward way for residents to request changes and repairs. The gateway to street improvements is ATL311 – the city’s central customer service system for non-emergency public works requests.

What is ATL311?

ATL311 is Atlanta’s centralized service for reporting non-emergency street issues and requesting improvements. You can contact ATL311 by:

●     Dialing 311 from any phone inside Atlanta city limits, or (404) 546-0311 from outside city limits.

●     Submitting an online service request at the ATL311portal

●     Using the ATL311 mobile app on an Android or iPhone.

●     Emailing ATL311@AtlantaGA.gov or reporting via social media channels (@ATL311)

ATL311 is designed to be a one-stop shop for reporting issues like potholes, street signs, roadway hazards, sidewalk defects, and more. After submitting a request, you will receive an automated email with a case number you can use to track progress.

Common ATL311 Requests

Typical street and transportation improvement requests through ATL311 and the City’s departments include:

  1. Potholes and Road Surface Problems
Report potholes and other roadway defects on city-maintained streets to have them patched or repaired. Pothole repairs are among the most common street maintenance requests.
  1. Crosswalks and Pavement Markings
Request repainting if striping for crosswalks, loading zones, stop bars, or curb markings are faded or missing.
  1. Traffic Signals and Stop Signs
Request inspection or repair for traffic signals and pedestrian signal issues that are not immediate emergencies.
  1. Missing or Damaged Street Signs
Ask for a missing street name, speed limit, or other regulatory sign to be replaced or repaired.
  1. Speed Tables and Traffic Calming Measures
Requesting traffic calming devices (like speed tables) through ATL311 to start the journey to slower speeds on residential roadways. The city will determine whether a traffic study is appropriate and what requirements (like resident petitions) apply.
  1. Sidewalk  Defects or New Sidewalk Requests
Report sidewalks that are cracked or trip hazards, or request new sidewalks where they are missing entirely through the portal.
  1. Right-of-Way Maintenance and Obstructions
Report issues like overgrown vegetation that blocks visibility or contractor equipment blocking the right-of-way for clearance.
  1. Other Hazards
Use ATL311 to report storm drain hazards, damaged manhole lids, drainage problems, and other street or sidewalk concerns.

How to Submit a Successful Request for Improvement

To submit a portal request more likely to lead to change:

  1. Be Specific About Location
Include the exact street address or nearest intersection, quadrant, and zip code. This helps City crews find the problem quickly.
  1. Describe the Issue Clearly
Explain what’s wrong, how long it’s been a problem, and any safety impacts. Attach photos in the online forms or app to better describe the issue.
  1. Choose the Right Category
ATL311 asks you to choose a category when submitting online. The more accurate the category, the faster the city can route your request to the right department.
  1. Follow Up if Needed
If a project seems stalled, use your case number to follow up with ATL311 or revisit your online request. This establishes a record and can prompt renewed action.

When to Call 911 Instead of 311

ATL311 is for non-emergency issues. If there’s an immediate safety threat — for example, a downed power line, active traffic danger, or situation that could cause harm right now — call 911.

Beyond 311: Atlanta Transportation Policies

Some street changes —like official lane closures, right-of-way work, or installation of new infrastructure — may require permits from the Atlanta Department of Transportation. For major projects, visit the our services page to learn about traffic studies, right-of-way permits, and planning processes.

City systems can seem daunting, but ATL311 is your tool for improving your street. By taking a few minutes to submit a well-documented request, you help make your neighborhood safer and more functional for everyone.
