ATLANTA – The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) is prepared for an inclement weather response. The safety and drivability of the city’s roadways remain our primary objective. Based on the National Weather Service (NWS) latest forecast, ATLDOT is preparing to activate a Level 2 response in advance of the first winter weather event of the year, expected on Friday, January 10, 2025.
An ATLDOT Level 2 response occurs when temperatures fall between 32 and 25 degrees with light precipitation. Staff will monitor weather conditions. Based on the weather forecast, crews are prepared to deploy and treat priority roadways bridges, overpasses and routes to hospitals, police stations and fire stations. Bridges and overpasses are highest priority for treatment as they freeze faster than roads due to higher elevations.
Crews will begin pre-treating roadways with brine beginning at 1:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2025. During an actual winter weather event, motorists are encouraged to remain off the roadway.
ATLDOT has a combination of in-house and contracted winter weather resources for deployment, including:
When the city is significantly impacted by weather conditions, ATLDOT operations will work continuously to ensure roadways are clear and passable.
