ATLANTA – The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) is pleased to announce the completion of repairs and the full reopening of the bridge located over the CSX railroad on Cheshire Bridge Road NE from Wellbourne Drive NE to Faulkner Drive NE.
ATLDOT reopened the bridge today after being closed due to public safety concerns resulting from extensive damage caused by a fire on Wednesday, December 20, 2023. ATLDOT collaborated with various agencies and partners in a coordinated effort to repair and reopen the structure in five (5) months.
“We appreciate the community’s patience of the community as ATLDOT contractors and engineers thoroughly assessed and repaired the damaged structure,” ATLDOT Commissioner Solomon Caviness said. “This Cheshire Bridge railroad overpass will provide safe access to and through the Piedmont Heights community for business and residential travelers.”
The Cheshire Bridge Structural Repairs project included several key components:
• Shoring of existing utilities
• Demolition and removal of sections of the previously damaged bridge
• Repairs to portions of the bridge structure
• Construction of a new retaining wall
• Installation of new asphalt roadway to connect the end of the bridge
The repairs were expedited with a round-the-clock work schedule and design-build construction plan. As a testament to our innovative approach, crews restored the bridge’s structural integrity by replacing one span, rather than entire bridge.
