ATLANTA – The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) continues to operate under a Level 2 response during the city’s current winter weather event. Crews initially pre-treated roadways with brine and are operating 12-hour rotating shifts to help mitigate hazardous driving conditions.
Since the activation of its Level 2 response, ATLDOT crews have completed the treatment of approximately 430 miles of Priority 1 and 2 roads. Additionally, 250 Priority 1 and 2 bridges have also been treated. Treatment of Priority 3 roads will begin today.
An ATLDOT Level 2 response occurs when temperatures fall between 32 and 25 degrees with light precipitation. Following forecasts from the National Weather Service (NWS), ATLDOT deployed crews to treat priority roadways bridges, overpasses and routes to hospitals, police stations and fire stations. Bridges and overpasses are highest priority for treatment as they freeze faster than roads due to higher elevations. Motorists are encouraged to remain off the roadway.

ATLDOT has a combination of in-house and contracted winter weather resources for deployment, including:
- 26 Brine Trucks
- 13 Salt Spreaders
- 6 Snowplows
- 2 Brine Stations
We have utilized:
- 420 Tons of Salt
- 25,000 Gallons of Brine
- 200 Employees (100+ per 12-hr shift)
- Contractor Support Available
ATLDOT operations will work continuously to ensure roadways are clear and passable.
Priority 1 Roads includes high volume roadways and arteries.
Priority 2 Roads includes collector roadways and school bus routes.
Priority 3 Roads includes local streets and cul-de-sacs.
