Commissioner Solomon Caviness, IV

Atlanta DOT Commissioner

With more than 25 years of experience, Commissioner Solomon Caviness is an industry leader in the field of transportation infrastructure. His career in transportation programming includes collaboration with federal, state, and local governments to improve the quality of life for all. He is focused on delivering a 21st-century transportation network that supports travel options in the Atlanta region. 

Commissioner Caviness currently leads the Atlanta Department of Transportation, which is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of Atlanta’s multi-modal mobility network. He supports a workforce of over 280 public servants responsible for over 95,000 street signs, 155 bridges, 1,400 miles of sidewalks, operation of 1,100 traffic signals, and 4,500 lane-miles of roadway throughout the City of Atlanta. He is an honorary member of Atlanta’s “Pothole Posse,” a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, and serves on the Intelligent Transportation Society of America’s Board of Directors.

Commissioner Caviness received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business.

Mr. Caviness is a proud Atlanta native. He is married to Leticia Caviness and the doting father of two girls.
